A public meeting to consider an ordinanceon keeping roosters withinCity limits.
July 24, 9:00 a.m.and July 29, 6:30 p.m.- Fort Worth Botanic Gardens Dorothea Leonhardt Lecture Hall The City of Fort Worth has struggled with many animal control issues over the years. Recently, many of the old laws have been amended or revised to reflect a modern growing city. First, the city addressed the large animal ordinances and then more recently the “aggressive canine” issues. Each of these issues has been met with lots of public consideration during sponsored town hall meetings, to solicit the populace opinion. I believe the city has been moving in the right direction by making some positive changes. Anytime people are living in close quarters such as in a city people must consider their neighbors well being. Laws must be created that will promote peace between neighbors and across cultures. City ordinance currently allows twelve chickens of unspecified gender to be housed at any residence ½ acre or less (50 chickens of unspecified gender on 1 acre). Residents are currently using this to legally house roosters possibly for underground cockfighting. Does the City of Fort Worth Code inadvertently support cockfighting? If this doesn’t seem important, consider this fact--cockfighting has been on the rise in North Texas. I think there are several reasons the city should outlaw roosters in the city. Cockfighting is currently illegal in all lower 48 states. Closing this loophole in Fort Worth’s Municipal Code will play a key role in assisting authorities to thwart future illegal activities such as: involvement of minors, drug use, and animal cruelty. This argument may look like the old arguments of outlawing cockfighting, but allowing gaps in the system puts us back into the same situation. Closing this loophole, in Fort Worth’s Municipal Code, will promote peace among neighbors. Allowing even twelve chickens of unspecified gender to be cooped at a residence supports small scale cockfighting; it is time the City of Fort Worth made a statement about its position on all cockfighting.
